Hello,
      To fix your problem, download the latest version of XFree86 which is
3.3.4
However to run this version, you need FreeBSD 3.0 or later.(they are
supposed to have FreeBSD 2.2.x binaries soon in version 3.3.5)

3.3.4 has native support for the i740 chip. Just download X and when
configuring, select one of the i740 cards.
