It is completely safe........ so long as you know what you are doing :-)

The machine that I'm writing this on dual-boots FreeBSD and Windows 2000.

You need to have some spare, unpartitioned space on a drive in your
machine. This can be the same or a different drive from your Windows
2000 installation. If your current Windows installation uses your whole
drive, and you don't want to add another, you will need to look into
resizing that partition which is something I don't know much about.

When you have some spare space, you can simply follow the installation
instructions given in http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ being careful
that when you are using FDISK to create your FreeBSD slice you don't
overwrite your Windows drive.

Then you install the FreeBSD Boot Manager on your Windows drive and next
time you boot, you will magically be asked which OS you want to boot!

Basically you should read the installation part of the FreeBSD Handbook.

Please feel free to e-mail me back with any further questions on this,
as I have done it several times myself.

Andrew.
