Do you have valid DNS configured for your machine? In my experience, this is what sendmail is complaining about. There may be a mismatch between the hostname you have supplied, and the hostname assigned by your ISP (I'm guessing here, that you are talking about a box on a cable modem or some such?), or the hostname you have supplied is not in the DNS at all.
