you need to set your CLASSPATH environment var.
do something like this:

[nathan@sabre lib]$ CLASSPATH="/usr/local/jdk1.1.8/lib/classes.zip"
[nathan@sabre lib]$ export CLASSPATH
[nathan@sabre lib]$ echo $CLASSPATH
/usr/local/jdk1.1.8/lib/classes.zip

your specific jdk location may differ, but i think this is where the
ports install sticks it by default
