There are two main possibilities: 
 1/ your ram has deteriorated. 
 2/ There is a bug in FreeBSD 2.2.x and 3.0 that does this under some
unknown circumstances. We see it in busy systems (many 1000s of them with
2 completely different hardware designs so it aint a flakey SIMM). 

The bug gives a killed process on a timescale of once a week or so,
(usually cron or something)  so it sound more like the flakey ram problem.
