i had one in bits next to me last week.

the thing that would make it difficult to put something else on them would
be the configuration.

the front panel has a small lcd and some buttons, which is where the
configuration is done. so software for that would have to be written. then
the ongoing config is all through a series of web applications, which
would need to be ported. there is no keyboard/monitor connector, so
network access is critical.
