some followup:
	the same 'latest -current' works fine on an opteron though
chips are not the same:

CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.06GHz (3065.81-MHz 686-class CPU)
bge0: <Broadcom BCM5704S Dual Gigabit Ethernet, ASIC rev. 0x2002>

and
CPU: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 240 (1394.01-MHz K8-class CPU)
bge0: <Broadcom BCM5704C Dual Gigabit Ethernet, ASIC rev. 0x2003>
