What I was really talking about was the location of the added .include (I thought share/mk/bsd.port.mk instead of ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk); by talking about bsd.init.mk I accidentally refocused the discussion. New, somewhat less incorrect proposal: can the .include <bsd.own.mk> go in share/mk/bsd.port.mk instead of ports/Mk/bsd.ports.mk, to make it OS version dependent? ports/Mk/bsd.ports.mk would have to have lots of trickery around the .include <bsd.own.mk> to make things work on 4.x too.
