Or is it just "K&R theory" :-) I'd always assumed it was a term borrowed from the telephone system that was Bell Labs main concern. The list mapping names to telephone numbers (or vice versa) was called a directory, as in "directory assistance". In Unix, the names are filenames and the numbers are inodes.
