Are you using the port (see /usr/ports/multimedia/mythtv or
http://www.freshports.org/multimedia/mythtv/)?
Or are you using something downloaded from somewhere else?

I am using the port version (actually, an older version):
root@kg-fil# mythbackend --version
Library API version: 0.20.20060828-3
Source code version: FreeBSD Ports
Collection /usr/ports/multimedia/mythtv, MythTV version 0.20 Tue Mar 13

using_freebox using_live using_x11 using_xv using_xrandr using_frontend

I don't know, but my mythbackend reports the same prefix:
root@kg-fil# mythbackend --printsched
2007-12-13 02:56:01.180 Using runtime prefix = /usr/local

I think on closer inspection, you'l find that directory only contains MythTV shared data (xml files for menues and so on).
If you look, you will find out that the programs are located in /usr/local/bin. Example:
root@kg-fil# which mythbackend
/usr/local/bin/mythbackend

Aha. Forget my question above about which version you are using.

Anyway, hope some of this helped a little bit.
Hopefully someone with more time and knowledge than me will answer your question better.
