Locking and NFS are an interesting combo, to say the least (I've heard that the upcoming BSD/OS 4.0 does do locking properly over NFS (as far as that is possible)). However, you could sidestep the issue by delivering mail to Maildirs and using the Maildir patches to pine. This entails switching from sendmail to another MTA called qmail (mostly easy, depending on your setup/amount of local hacks). See http://www.qmail.org for details. Good luck!
