I think you have to explicitly give it a modeline (straight over
from an XFree3 config.) I use the following for 1280x1024@100Hz:

# 1280x1024 @ 100 Hz, 107.16 KHz hsync
Modeline "1280x1024"    181.75 1280 1312 1440 1696  1024 1031 1046 1072 -HSync -VSync

in Section "Monitor".

Without the modeline, XFree4 seems to default to 85Hz when I specify
1280x1024 in the Screen section.
