It seems you *have* to have XFree86 4.x to build KDE3 properly.
Basically you need to wipe out all ports that use X, delete your
/usr/X11R6 directory, and start by building XFree86-4.  Then build KDE
and all your other apps again.  It should only take you a few
days. ;-(
