No. I don't know how to ping from a Win 98 box.
The network connection seems to work on the Win98 box however. It gets
it high speed internet -through- that connection.
From other machines I can ping the Win98 box fine.

david>$ ping -c 4 192.168.1.4
PING 192.168.1.4 (192.168.1.4): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=0.578 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.296 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=0.458 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=0.537 ms

This leads me to believe that the problem is not cable related.
