Is the Opteron 244 rated for that PC3200 DRAM? I thought PC2700 was the
max except for the 248 and 246.

If the BIOS fails to properly reduce RAM timings based on the CPU
stepping then Bad Things might happen.

If you have any PC2700 DRAM you might try it. See what this line says
in /var/run/dmesg.boot to find out the stepping (which is encoded in the
ID - see
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/25759.pdf
for information as to what this means).

CPU: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 244 (1793.45-MHz K8-class CPU)
  Origin = "AuthenticAMD"  Id = 0xf51  Stepping = 1
