Yes, I did and had it like that.
And you can do that with lpr vs. cups-lpr as well using CUPS_OVERWRITE_BASE=YES.
(Which brings up a minor point about naming consistency which could be dealt
  with independantly of this thread.)
But I don't think it's a clean way to do it.
And it doesn't hurt if you are able to remove the subsystem cleanly.

As a marginal note I'd like to point out that I like clean builds.
Thusly I remove the include directory and reinstall the header files
before a world cycle. This adds some annoyance to the REPLACE method.

OK, that having said, I only like to opt for Colin's patch once more.
I'll stop right here in this thread.
