Why?  You should never, absolutely NOT, do things that you don't
understand to the files of /etc.  It's very easy to make things go
wrong by making some change.

You probably forgot or chose not to update the password database
files, after running mergemaster.  Try booting your machine in
single-user mode and see if you can fix things this way.  If you need
help with the commands you can use while in single-user mode, feel
free to ask here...
