I [newbie btw] have one of these in my 3.1-STABLE box, which currently
isn't running X, but I used to use the SVGA server and XFree 3.3.3.1 on
3.0-RELEASE with a 2MB card based on the Trident 9680 chipset, and it
worked OK. It took some fiddling to get it to do 800x600 @ 72Hz, but I did
it. As far as the clockchips and ramdacs go, i think i went with the
defaults (something like 'auto sense' or 'none' or something along those
lines) and it worked. I can't remember if I got > 8bpp, but I am fairly
sure I did. I think I still have my old /etc/XF86Config around if you want
to see it.

Windows 98: n.
Minor patch release for 32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a
16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit
microprocessor, written by a 2-bit company that can't stand for 1 bit
  of competition.
