One has to wonder just why they bother using CVS then....

It would not be the first time I've checked out an early version of GCC
from the FSF repo, applied local changes and walked them forward.  If it
would help the effort, I am willing to at least give it a try.  I guess
you don't have your modified gcc-2.7.2.1 bits any more? (since I can find
that release's dist tarball)
