Not reading the CVS FAQ, manuals, or any mailing lists around here 8)

The correct way to update your tree is with 

cvs update -Pd -r RELENG_2_2

which will prune old directories, build new ones, and guarantees that
everything that comes out is at RELENG_2_2 (I have had problems with
this if I don't explicitly supply the tag).
