To get any error messages, did you try to start "gdm -nodaemon" from the console as root?
I remember similar problems with kdm, but can't tell you what exactly went wrong. Note that many startup programs for X are just
scripts. So bother to look into them, add some "echo"es to track down, where it hangs.
