I believe most of the newer shells (pretty much those that have inline
editing) turn off driver echo (basically do their own "stty -echo") and
then work out for themselves based on what you type what should appear
on the screen.

Of course, it's hard to catch them at it because they reset the mode
whenever you run another program, like "stty", for example.

Try running /bin/sh and then see what happens when you type "stty -echo".
