 * From: Chuck Robey <chuckr@picnic.mat.net>

 * I marked this BROKEN. My problem, Satoshi (and the reason I tried many

BROKEN doesn't do any good, as I keep saying, as the package builder
tries it anyway. You need RESTRICTED or FORBIDDEN or something.

 * There isn't any verbage whatsoever that makes it available to the
 * public. The gnuplot folks explicitly (on their web site) ask you to use
 * older versions of gd, and they maintain copies of those on their site.
 * There isn't any mention of the gnuplot folks having any LZW permission.

The only sensible thing for gnuplot at this point is to get it to
support the new gd. Do you think you (the maintainer) can fix it
before the freeze (coming up in 22 hours)? There is an alternative,
gnuplot+, that already has a similar fix (PR ports/12752).

 * What with our ports system having *reams* of gif-related stuff, I'm not
 * sure what to do. You want gd-old marked restricted and added to legal,
 * maybe no cdrom? That cans gnuplot too (unless I patch it to stop having
 * gif as a terminal type). On top of that, all the various ports that use
 * gif directly (like gifmerge) or indirectly (like xfig) are certainly in
 * violation also.

gd-old should be taken out. As I said in the previous mail, we do not
make ports against the wish of the authors. Please remove it and
change the gnuplot dependency back to gd (even if you can't fix
gnuplot -- we don't want dangling dependencies).

 * I don't want to decide this, I don't understand the legal aspects, so I
 * am passing the buck. Sorry, but this will affect too many ports in too
 * broad a manner, I need advice here.

Don't worry about others. We generally follow the wish of the
authors. Hopefully most stuff will switch over to PNG soon.

Satoshi
