Well, we still plan to release 5.5 so yes I believe it is both useful and
necessary.  On a presonal level, my main gateway/ipf/www/smtp server is
happily running 5.4-STABLE with a gmirror slice and I don't plan to update
it to 6.0 anytime soon as it is only a PII/350 and recompiling all ports
would take forever.
