You are working too hard.

What does 

 # cd $PORTSDIR/print/pdftk ; make -V RUN_DEPENDS

show?  (You can do similarly for LIB_DEPENDS or BUILD_DEPENDS.)

On my system it says "gcc46:/.../ports.svn/lang/gcc".  If you do
not get this, there's the problem.
