Yeah, it works. And will keep doing so, so long as you don't use
whatever part of .8 caused the authors to decide that it wasn't
backwards compatible with .7. Or something else trys to use it, and
gets the wrong library because you lied to it about the version
number.

The correct solution is to recompile the webalizer, or install
freetype.so.7 as well as freetype.so.8.
