The daemon (not demon) logo predates FreeBSD...in general he's been a mascot 
for BSD operating systems for quite some time.  For a few words as to *why* 
BSD has the daemon as its mascot, take a look at:

I've never interpreted the BSD daemon as a sign of disrespect or jest towards 
Christianity or any other religion, and I'm confident that it was never 
intended as such.

PS.  I once made the mistake of referring to the BSD daemon as "the little 
devil logo" in front of Kirk McKusick.  He was very polite in correcting me, 
but nevertheless I nearly died of embarassment when I realized my error.
