First of all, thank you very much for replying!  He seemed to have fixed
the problem with the following solution:

replacing the line in ppp.conf

 set login "TIMEOUT 5 name:--ername: XXX word: XXX"

with
 set authname <username>
 set authkey <password>

I sure don't understand why, but thanks for the help! :)
