Hi again all. I've got a utility file server at one of our sites that's being a pain and deciding it's wanting to reboot each day for no apparent reason. I've tried moving the HD to another identical machine and it does the same thing, so I've ruled out the HW, and a fresh copy of Fbsd installed on the same disk stops the problem, but when I restore the disk to the current config from tape, the problem shows up again, so I know it's a software issue. Now I have an idea when and why it's happening but I'm looking for 3 things that I need, but they get wiped when the box reboots. Item 1: Where does the contents of the "messages" log go after reboot? I need the machine to dump everything off somewhere else so it doesn't overwrite any of the log files when it reboots. Item 2: I need to know the uptime that the box had when it rebooted. I'm thinking of maybe making a script that Cron could run every minute that would export the results of the "uptime" command to a text file, but I don't want to have to do that because the less I have running on here the happier I am. IT's already got too much running in my opinion. The problem is I'm not allowed to strip any more off. My hands are tied in regards to that. Item 3: Is there a way that I could force the machine to email me each time it reboots itself with a generic "Hey, I rebooted again" type message? Thanks for the tips everyone.
