CVS hasn't been modified in months, so I don't why it would start
deleting files.  I've been using it for months on Real(tm) Work and it
gladly shows me the conflicts.  (I used it earlier this morning to that
effect).

However, I'm running -stable, so it may be a -current things (unrelated
to CVS, since the versions in both are the same.)
