Are you running your DSL modem into PPP or bridged mode?
If you are in PPP mode, then your ethernet side is probably the
10 net (If you get the transport from USWEST). Just pick an
address in 10.0.0.x (the modem will be 10.0.0.1). 

If your in bridged mode, then you'll need to try FBSD 3.3 which
has BPF in the kernel and therefore the possibilty of DHCP.
