FreeBSD 5-current is already has gcc 3.1 in the base system and will
presumably be updated to gcc 3.2 or 3.3 before the release of
5.0-RELEASE.

FreeBSD 4-STABLE uses 2.95 as you note and that will most likely not
change. Updating gcc from 2.95 to 3.x is a fairly big change and
-stable is supposed to remain fairly stable.
