Success!! (or at least a work-around!) Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm currently using ctrl-alt F1, alt-F(n+1) (where n=number of vty's) to toggle into text mode and back to x11 mode. It appears to be working fine. For some reason the pc-card is working now too, maybe its problem was actually related to x11's problem.
