Perhaps, but I had only a spare parallel 7500-2 and found a couple of
PATA drives to fit it. I'm not sure if the 8500 series work - but now
that you mention it I'm curious. I wish I had one here to try (I've had
an 8-drive 3ware running perfectly for well over a year on another box)

In case you're not already familiar with 3ware: the cards do not present
themselves as ATA controllers to the host OS. atacontrol does not see a
3ware card. All drive management is done in hardware/firmware on the
card (unlike some) and only logical devices are presented to FreeBSD.
For this reason I'd assume that the 8500 cards would be fine too.

Mine shows (booted under 4.9) as:

twe0: <3ware Storage Controller> port 0xd800-0xd80f mem
0xf3800000-0xf3ffffff,0xf4000000-0xf400000f irq 11 at device 13.0 on pci0
twe0: 2 ports, Firmware FE7X 1.05.00.036, BIOS BE7X 1.08.00.044
twed0: <Unit 0, TwinStor, Normal> on twe0
twed0: 114438MB (234370904 sectors)
