    one of the best kept secrets on freebsd-questions@ (and in the
    handbook) is the fact that kernel build is a requirement in just a
    few special cases. Most questions that yield rebuild-your-kernel
    answers could (and probably should)
    be answered with "RTFM: kldload(8)".

    that said, maybe the answer you got is right.
