I played tonight with Xfce, KDE, slim and KDM and had a single issue: in 
KDE some desktop effects stutter (closing the "K" menu, switching 
workspaces with a cube effect, etc.). I noted that moving the mouse 
during those animations made the effects smooth.

Closing/reopenning sessions with either slim or KDM worked perfectly.

I see that kactivitymanagerd crashes a lot and some drm errors in dmesg. 
I don't know the consequences of that.

Could you post at least your Xorg.0.log and dmesg, please?
