Well consider for a moment why there is a special program called
vipw for updating the password file *properly*...it wasn't written for
fun. 
The password file /etc/passwd is there just because it has to be.
It's master.passwd that matters, vipw takes care of all of that for you.
See previous mail in thread for what you have to do if you do not use
vipw.
