"We don't need another news site"

"We need a central repository for BSD-related advocacy materials"

Etc.

Look. These people are volunteering to do what they are
volunteering to do.

No more, and no less.

It's ridiculous to try and make them fit into "The One True Site".

PR, advocacy, and the other things that fall under the umbrella of
"marketing" are not about Truth, they are about momentum.

People complain that the FreeBSD 5.0 release has not been widely
reported; B.F.D.: there are lead times, and FreeBSD didn't make a
concerted effort to schedule the release, or contact media outlets
at their respective lead times:

	Magazines 3 months
	Trade rags 1 month
	Newspapers 1 week
	Onlines/Slashfot	1 Day

Anything after that is, well, "old news".

Trying to do to PR the same thing that has been done to the source
tree, i.e. "The One True HEAD Branch, No Others Allowed" is as bad
an idea as making "The FreeBSD Handbook" the only book about FreeBSD.
It's not even such a good idea for source code, in fact, but the
tools -- CVS -- limit you to thinking that way. Don't carry that
limited thinking over into other areas of your life, or you will
find yourself old, living along, and owning 20 cats, as your sole
source of companionship.

IMO, the more FreeBSD-related sites, the better. The more FreeBSD
news outlets, the better.

PR and marketing are all about "creating buzz", like that from a
swarm of bees. One bee does not make a swarm.

If you are someone who does not understand this idea, please stay
out of the way of the people who do, particularly since they are
volunteering to do work. If you want to add to Daemon News, and
treat it as "The One True FreeBSD Site(tm)", then go ahead and
put your eggs into that basket: I'm sure they will appreciate the
contributions. But you will be doing less for FreeBSD advocacy,
marketing, PR, and overall visibility, by doing so. Don't drag
everyone else down to that level with you.

Thanks,
-- Terry
