Why not just use the pilot-link software ? That allows you to backup
your palm via the serial device (/dev/ttyd0 or /dev/ttyd1). It also
allows you to install new software.

If you use it with jpilot, you'll have a fairly sweet solution without
using the dialer side of it at all.
