Just run it under nice(1) from the start.

Also, note that the CPU usage and load averages may be calculated
differently in FreeBSD vs Linux (different method of weighting the
average, etc).  Just because ps shows the process using 75% CPU, that
doesn't necessarily mean it's only running 75% of the time; the
weighted average just might not have caught up yet.  The weighting is
done to give some stability to the numbers; if they were only
"instantaneous" CPU usage figures then they'd be oscillating around
wildly.
