i've got a compaq 1550 dmt, and it seems to say
that there's a soundBlaster pro inside. Playing
cd's is fine, but when i pump amp into the dsp,
all i get is static. Its very nice static,
but static none the less. It will play all the
amp data straight through, pacing it ... but
not playing it.

Its the same amp that runs on the *other* machine,
tho i have no clue whether its really a soundblaster
pro (cept for answering the init, and getting
autoconf'd correctly).

The fact that it generates static is a clue, what
should i do next to debug the problem i'm having.
