That they know of.

There are a number of programs that use user-provided strings
as filenames. INN uses $ as a separator in message-IDs. Cnews 
uses the message-ID as part of a temporary file name. Put them
together and make $ dangerous... boom.

If it's possible to integrate the namespace into the filesystem
and still achieve the desired result, it'd be a Good Thing to do
it.
