something like:

$ cd ~/tmp
$ fetch ftp://ftp.perl.org/pub/CPAN/src/perl-5.6.1.tar.gz
Receiving perl-5.6.1.tar.gz (5983695 bytes): 100%
5983695 bytes transferred in 3.6 seconds (1.60 MBps)
$ tar xzf perl-5.6.1.tar.gz
$ cd perl-5.6.1
$ ./Configure -des -Dprefix=/home/perl/5.6.1/
$ make -j5 && make test && make install
$ ln -s /home/perl/5.6.1/bin/perl /usr/bin/perl5.6

should do it.

not tested, so you'll have to fix my typos. :)
