Joe: The recommended way is to place it in "/root/kernels" and then make a
link to that location. It's not only closer, but safer in case you decide
to delete the directories and forget the kernel config is in there. Here's
what a link would look like:
/usr/src/sys/i386/conf/MYKERNEL@ -> /root/kernels/MYKERNEL
