For me this is how i opened up an xterm to my main shell box:

# This is the root menu
AddToMenu RootMenu "Root Menu"  Title
+               "Xterm"         Exec exec color_xterm +sb -sl 2048 -ut -bg black -fg white &

Sorry if this truncates, but you get the idea, throw that in your .fvwmrc
or whatever and poof off you go.
