When I have a particularly hard time adapting a port to FreeBSD, I often
get in touch with the authors, and tell them the changes I had to make, so
that they can decide it they want to incorporate any of the mods back into
their ports.  ports are public, I don't see why you couldn't send any or
all to anyone you like.
