Errors in kernel builds are almost always the fault of the user though (unless you're tracking the head of a branch and the error was checked in, but these are usually fixed within an hour or two). Double-check that your source tree is complete and up-to-date, and if you continue to have problems then go back to the GENERIC kernel, or compare your custom kernel for the thing you changed that broke it.
