Well, the first time i installed FreeBSD, and also the first time i saw it,
when i was to enable PPP connection (on a DSL modem, on the very single host
i have at my home), i've been reading the Handbook at the adequate section
and fifteen seconds later the PPP connection was established, with 100% one
try one success ratio, but since you are on it for weeks, you are quite sure
you didn't miss anything.

If you look at the PPP configuration for linux, does it help ?
