What are your power saving settings in the BIOS?  What are your apm 
settings?

It sounds like the BIOS might be putting your computer to sleep.  I suspect 
this could be a not-apm problem.

I disabled that BIOS stuff on my laptops running FreeBSD to avoid such 
problems.
