Perhaps you need to run

# /usr/ports/audio/pulseaudio ; make deinstall

I installed Xfce, but got a working GNOME too, IIRC it was gedit that  
installed GNOME as a dependency, however, I installed GDM and other GNOME  
stuff, but not GNOME 2 directly. I like GNOME 2, but upstream doesn't  
maintain it anymore and GNOME 3 is useless for my needs.

As you can see, I'm on 9.1 too:

FWIW, "normal" audio out does work with Xfce, I didn't test it with GNOME,  
but I've got issues with using the ADAT interface of my sound card.
